I have to agree that the squirrel traps are quite useless. They are flimsy, weak, and not escape proof. I threw mine out. (I do not throw many items out) You may consider the next size up. I have one of these. It is strong enough. I don't have rats, but caught everything else in it. Here is a quick link for one from Harbor Freight. Seems like they discontinued carrying the small useless squirrel version.

My particular traps are 1 inch by 1 inch. These big fat rats ain't getting out until I get them out.
I can see mice getting thru though.:)

Some chicken breeds are known for being hunters of rodents... usually mice. Buckeye is one such breed, I think I have seen videos of a Giants... and some game breeds love to hunt too.

Selecting for the hunting instinct in breeding might be interesting. Just a thought.

Chickens go into a coma at night when rats are active. Rats are nocturnal which is the opposite of chickens.
They will go after them in the daytime but would not be able to control them.

Wish we could keep any snakes around here, the birds keep eating them (small water snakes) do you know if a rat snake can be imported to keep in a barn? And if it would die in the winter freeze? I grew up in the southwest US with gopher snakes around, but they don't live up here where I moved, and the only indigenous snakes are little tadpole eating water snakes. By the way, did you eat the rattlesnake?

True on the night raids... believe me got my own war starting... will be baiting for different critters first the burrowing thing, next what ever is in the shrubs at night... I know these critters are trying to gain access as I see evidence of Night attempts in morning. I think I may have more than Rats, tomato stealer may not be rat.

Get a game cam and post pictures here so we can see what you have in the bushes!

:yesss:

Well I don't know about getting a game camera but I will see what I can do.

Here is a funny but informative video on figuring out what killed your chicken. I have not had loss yet this time around, but suspect more than one critter working at access to the coop at night, I have had attacks years ago thus my coop being on brick this time around.
