Rate of gain per pound of feed?

My brother and I have been thinking about raising some chickens. Just wondering what the rate of gain for lets say a Cornish chicken raising it to maybe 4 to 5 pound before it is dressed? Also is it about 6 to 8 weeks for a Cornish to get to around that wieght?

Growing up on a farm you think I would have an idea of what it would be but I have been away from the farm far to long.

Hope to do raise them like we did when we were kids I think I remember that after about 3 or so weeks we would let them have run of the farm so I know that would cut down on feed but just would like to get somewhat of an idea of what it is going to cost per chicken to get it to my dinner table.

My mouth is watering thinking about a farm fresh BBQ chicken hot off of the grill. The store bought chick quailty just keeps getting worst.

What I am kind of looking for is what is would be the average weight gain per chicken per pound of feed fed. I know that the older they get just like cows, pigs, & other livestock their weight of gain from a pound of feed goes down.

I doubt if I would buy sack feed since we still have a couple of feed stores in the area that can grind and mix your feed to your specifations. Plus it should be cheaper because you are not payng for bagging of the fed.

Maybe what I am asking I am not asking correctly. Like I said it has been a lot of years since I left the farm.

Beau.....I have 9...cornish X right now in a brooder. They will be 4 weeks old, Sunday. I started out with a 50 lb bag....and at 4 weeks, mine are about 3 pounds...maybe 4. I still have about half the feed left...so I am thinking they might finish the feed, about the time we slaughter. I hope this helps you.

This seems weird to me. Someone raised on a farm would surely know what the term conversion rate is and how to look it up?

Except for your post, every post in this thread is dated April 7, 2007.
The OP's date of joining is also listed as April 7, 2007.

So the person joined the site, made a thread immediately, replied once, and has apparently not been back since then.

The thing that seems most weird to me is how you happened to find a thread that is so old, with no new posts in so many years.

(As for the person forgetting terms and not knowing how to look that up: people forget many things, depending on how long ago they last dealt with the information, and how well they knew it then.)

Oh, that suddenly makes perfect sense (except for why the forum thought it should "suggest" something that old, but computers definitely do weird things sometimes.)
