Rats🫩

Interesting what kind of dogs can be ratters ? Any breed? Hire about cats?
My dog got a mouse that was in my house once. Good dog. She’sa mountain cur.
My neighbors have several cats that they let loose who basically live on my property when they are loose and they run all around the outside of my poultry area fence I think they also been catching mice/rats out there cause I haven’t seen one in years now praise the Lord!
This!! Add poultry-friendly predators. My dogs, cat and Roos work together to guard the flock and get rid of all sorts of pests. The chickens handle ticks and fleas, the dogs handle other predators and food thieves, the cat handles smaller rodents. They all get along well. We live in a rural wooded area with fields and a lake nearby. These guys do their jobs and seem to love it :)

I think schnauzers are raters

I have a GS mix an a Great Pyr, an they hunt the mice
My pug would kill mice but rats were a little much for him 😆 He did finish one off for me that was half-caught in a snap trap but it was the size of a mouse. A full-size Norwegian rat was too ambitious for him.

Terriers are the #1 best ratters, but my old Aussie was excellent as is her half golden cross daughter Bailey. Pretty much any dog that has average agility and willingness can make a good ratter.

I have a mastiff that is enthusiastic but he’s too big and slow to really do anything and he ends up sabotaging it for Bailey because he gets in the way. Also he sulked for a few days after he saw Bailey and I actually kill some, evidently he didn’t realize that was the point….poor guy’s a big softie.

As for cats, cats are a mixed bag. I’ve had excellent ratters, I’ve had cats that just sit and stare at them, and my last cat “Manx” refused to hunt rats but was an expert squirrel killer, his mother was an expert snake catcher but not so much with rats. I prefer the snakes because they eat rats too, so she kinda made the problem worse.
I prefer dogs over cats as ratters because of the dog is able you can switch tell them to rat and they will whereas cats only hunt on their own terms.
