ratty tails?

my toms aren't confined, they have run of the front of the barn, has to be 40x40 at least? I want to show them but their tail feather tips look a bit ratty, how can i fix/prevent that, i can't even figure what they're rubbing on, no mating yet, and not confined

Washing out of question? My chickens get theirs ratty all the time, just because they bathe in the mud and it dries on the feathers...

Even my freerange turkeys have this problem this time of year. They won't look good again until the molt and get new feathers.

dang it, i guess they're going to the fair with ratty ends lol. maybe if every ones turkeys look that way it wont be a big deal?
