Hello peeps.....

The beginning of this year, a household family member passed away.My dog, was, in no way attached to him.But a couple months later, he got really, really sick.He wouldn't eat and he couldn't, or wouldn't? Walk.He is a almost 9 year old PlothoundXLab.Then, about a month and a half ago, my sister and I where gone all day at horse camp for four days, then we went away for another four days, no contact at home, and our mom was also working all day during that time.He ended up with Despression and seperation anxiety.
He lost a lot of weight during that time and when he was sick, and he has pretty much gotten over his Despression and anxiety.
But sent gaining any weight. He is Currentally eating:Grain-Free Newman's Own Grain free wet dog food and Blue Seal, Active heigh fat kibble.
I was wondering if a Raw Diet would help his coat, and help him gain weight.

I would apprecite any info

TIA.

I might try a better quality dog food first. I checked out the ingredients on the dry and there's lots of extras and not a lot of meat. If he's got a bad coat on it than it's not doing it for him.

Feeding raw can be a pain, and can be more costly than buying a better or different food, but everyone has their own opinions on dog food, so expect a lot of them.

I have had dogs be depressed from losing other dogs. It can last for a few months generally. I would also try giving more treats throughout the day to try to get him interested in eating.

I personally let mine eat as they please, the bowl is always full. Mine have been on Taste of the Wild, the Wetland formula and the Pacific stream formula for 3 years now and they do really well on it. I currently have 5 dogs.

You may need to try a few different brands to find one that works well for your dog. He also needs time to grieve as well. Poor boy.

I fed my dogs and cats RAW for years. It will not put weight on a dog. It actually helps them stay thin, as there are no fillers or junk. First, I would check medical. A vet visit is in order...worms, heartworm, Lymes disease are just a few things I can think that should be checked. As for his coat, YOu can give him some fish oil on his food, or coconut oil. I break open a fish oil tablet and squeeze it on my dogs food.

These is the best thing I've ever found to get weight back on. Start with a smaller amount and build up or it will upset their stomach.

1 pound cheap hamburger (for high fat %)
1 1/3 cups Total cereal
1 1/2 cups uncooked oatmeal
1 raw egg
6 tablespoons wheat germ
1 package Knox unflavored gelatin
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons unsulphured molasses
Pinch of salt

x2 on what Moonshiner said. That's an old recipe that we used as well when we were raising working GSDs. It will help get weight back on. Roll it up into meatballs and give one at meal time to supplement. If its stomach does fine with them, give 1 morning and one evening.

First:His coat really isn't a huge problem Currentally, it's a bit better as I've started fish oil.

He isn't sick any more, I had him checked twice. All the Dr. Could really rule out it was depression.
(Also, he is sick no more)

And actually, Oldhenlikesdogs, I have tried a BUNCH of foods to see what he would eat.Belive it or not, this is the only thing.

That you for the recipie, Moonshiner.
