I wanted to tell everyone that in a copy of backyard poulty there was mention that feeding raw meat and maggotty meat to chickens can result in dead chickens. I'm at the library but the point is that feeding such as this can be dangerous. Salmonella is not limited to chickens but can be passed on to them by what you feed them.
I would personally not want to sell eggs to anyone who might get sick because of what I fed my birds. The thought of a lawsuit is scarey not to mention the harm to people I love.
Please give a little thought to what you feed your birds. Common sense should prevail and is it really worth saving a few pennies?

Raw meat is one thing, maggoty meat is quite another. There's nothing inherently wrong with feeding raw meat. Chickens are omnivours. They will eat mice, frogs, snakes & other small critters given the chance & they don't cook them first.

I've been feeding my dogs raw meat and veggies for awhile. The girls hear me in the kitchen and come running when I prepare the dog food. If I don't get the food ready fast enough, they hop through the dog door into the kitchen to hurry me up.

I give them a scoop or two of the ground meat/veg mix out on the patio and they love it (we rotate between beef, lamb and turkey). The meat is always fresh - so far, so good. Everyone's been doing great. If I'm not watchful, they even run off with the meaty bones I give to the dogs out in the yard.

My chickens eat frogs and mice on what seems like a regular basis.....a little raw hamburger meat once in a while is fine, I'm sure

Fresh raw meat is fine, maggoty old nasty meat is NOT. Why anyone would do that is beyond me.

Ok at the risk of getting kicked off this forum, anyone who feeds their birds dead mice, raw meat is not right and willingly ignorant. Other animals can carry diseases and they can be passed on to your birds. To say your attitude upsets me is an understatement. It is absolutely bad biosecurity but then I expect you just don't care. For those who do your are the respectable poultry owners and unfortunately not everyone on this forum is. My concern is not only for the welfare of my birds but my neighbors.

Wow.....who in the world said they FED their birds frogs and mice??? They live OUTSIDE, where the frogs and mice do. Raw meat is not willingly ignorant. My birds free range, I really don't want to know everything they're eating, it would probably gross me out

I am a very respectable poultry owner, I feel no need to defend my choices.

So sorry to have upset you, you for sure didn't upset me

But I will give you a big

for saying I am "not right" and "willingly ignorant". That is uncalled for and super childish.

I never met an animal that cooked their meat

Mother nature made chickens omnivorous foragers, meaning they will eat practically anything they can find and kill - this includes critters and bugs, fresh or dead. I doubt they would have evolved to eat a diet that would kill them!

It's when humans intervene that things get nasty!

Don't tell him what happens when they catch bugs!
