I even tried to get a dwarf goat, with 4H as my escuse, and he won't let me.

Bring your DH to our place...he'll fall in love and you'll be on your way!

Thankfully here in California, we can buy raw milk easily without cow share. Also it's great when the milk goes sour, you don't toss it out. Make yogurt or something with it. I usually drink all my milk before that happens but will try it some day.

In Colorado you have to buy a cow share or have your own cow.

Since I can't afford either, I do the next best thing. Use only pasteurized heavy cream. Cream does not undergo the damaging homogenization process. You can sometimes find whole milk that is not homogenized at places like whole foods, but it is spendy. Avoid ULTRA-pasteurized dairy whenever possible.

As for getting a goat, you better make sure you like the taste before you end up caring for a critter that you love, but end up not being able to stand their milk.

I have tried goat's milk in many forms and all I can say is

If I had room and money for a dairy animal, it would be a small herd of Irish Dexters (mini cows!!!

Wow! Thanks for all the help!

I had some family that had been stationed in Iceland, and I remember them saying something about goat milk being the norm there. I think they liked it. I've never tried it, only cause I haven't seen it.

Mmmmmmmm goats milk...YUM! Ours tastes like half and half and my kids LOVE IT better than cows milk. (we don't have a cow yet, so it's store bought) It will taste different depending on what you feed the goat, but most is sweet if it is raw. The taste really changes and becomes strong when it is pasteurized so we keep it raw here.

, but when it's fresh and the goat is kept in nice, clean conditions, fed with quality feed and hay, the milk is amazing. It's JUST like half and half, tastes fantastic on its own and is the best in coffee!! AND... it makes wonderful cheese, will sit to make cream and makes cakes etc really rich and delicious.

Sure, you leave it in the fridge too long and it gets goaty, but that's just a natural process. 'Home grown' goat milk is NOTHING like the evil-tasting crap you buy in stores.

In our county, you must sign that you understand raw milk is for pet-consumption only. You can have your children removed from your home if you are found giving it to your children...ask my next door neighbor (full disclosure - the kids were only removed for one month, though, while they educated the parents on the possible dangers.

I've reviewed the info available both pro and con...and if I had my own cows and could ensure the freshness/cleanliness of the raw milk - I would consume it no problem (I grew up in Wisconsin and love the flavor).

I have reservations about giving it to my kids (immune systems are still immature)...check with your pediatrician - if you trust your pediatrician with your children's well-being he or she wouldn't lead you astray!

Louis Pasteur was not a complete moron. He was on to something
