I am posting this as a matter of interest for anyone who might care to read it.
I have a bit of a incubating and hatching story to tell. I made my own incubator. I tried three times to hatch some chicken eggs. The first time I followed all the rules as best I could, not one hatched. But after going well beyond the incubation peried I found that all my eggs had fully developed chicks that were dead in the shell. The second time I followed all the rules and the results were the same, well developed chicks dead in the shells. The third time I followed all the rules and much the same thing happened, except one chick hatched. All the others were dead in the shells. This time, the fourth time, I said to heck with the rules, I am just going to do what I feel I should do because I was feeling discouraged. Out of fourteen eggs, thirteen hatched. I just couldn't believe it. They started early and just kept hatching and hatching. Seven of my chicks are very cute little banties. The remainder are mixed breeds only two or which I can identify as barred rock chicks. All of my chicks are very healthy, eating well and very active. I did have one very unusual egg given me by the farmer who gave me all of the eggs. This odd one is a very elongated bantie egg. It is still in the incubator and today is the hatching deadldine. I have candled it and it appears to have a live embryo in it. It seems to be jumping all over the place but it looks very underdeveloped. I am going to leave it there for a while and see what does happen, if anything.
Now, I am not advocating that anyone follow anything that I did. But it is all very curious to me. Anyone who might like to comment, please feel free to do so.
