I posted about this earlier, and am noticing several other posts along similar lines.

Thanks to those who posted possible causes - however, I was never able to figure what is causing the problems.

Anyway.....the original "victim" did die, and a few days later, I noticed another chick with a foamy eye. I isolated him immediately, and treated him with oxytetracycline in his water. His eye gummed up completely, and was very swollen - the same as the other chick, and then the other eye became involved.

HOWEVER.....rather than dying and being shipped off for necropsy - he is recovering. I still have him in my office (phewwww!), and he is eating, and drinking really, really well. Both his eyes are open and clear. He's been away from the flock for 8 days.

Is it safe to reintroduce him to you think?

Thanks for any advice.

I want to say I'm glad he recovered, however, he is probably a carrier of the disease now. And we dont know exactly which disease. I myself cant advise you to put him back with the others, though they are probably already exposed. This is the emotional side of raising chickens. It can get quite stressful.

Its a hard call, Glad to hear he's better !! I think its up to you what you do and when you do it.

Well, if anyone can shed some light on this I for one would be appreciative. Specklec Hen, I stopped using antibiotics until this day. My birds are developing this swollen eye problem along with repiratory "rales" when I hear them at night on the roost. I have lost one hen so far. I have a few other with this problem and frankly I am baffled. No discharge from the notrils. You know I have read and read and read about CRD and Coryza and really it may be CRD, but I just do not know.

The chickens start out sneezing, some get a closed eye and then recover. Some get both eyes closed and it takes a long time to recover. I have a closed flock and have had it for many weeks.

No snot this time, just these swollen eyes and lots of sneezing.

I will research more, the rest of the flock is out and about. I have about 5 birds now with the sypmtoms.

I have decided to use Sulmet and will do the obligatory 10 days in the waterer.

You could call you state vet and find out where they do chicken optopsiys (spelling? sorry) That might tell yah whats wrong and how to treat it. They do them in my area for about $30. I figure its cheaper than trying 10 different kinds of anti's. Good luck !!
