Re-homing Roosters Suggestions

I used to have a place to take the males to sell and would sell them all in a matter of minutes. I have taken over around 100 males and sold them all fairly quickly. It was a 2 hour drive one way. Since they moved another hour further away so now it would be a 3 hour drive one way so I take them to our local farm swap and sell them.

I might be mis-remembering, but I believe part of Hmong culture involves cockfighting. A suitor is to present his future father-in-law with excellent fighters as a betrothal / wedding gift.
Unless I knew a person well, I wouldn't give a roo away, either. Better your quick dispatch than a fight death.
Some of the places you mentioned aren't suitable for a roo; public places like community gardens, for instance. Roo aggression isn't terribly predictable. Good luck to you.

A fellow bus driver who also works at animal auction, picked me up 3 hens in the beginning of my chicken adventure. They have turned out to be very nice ladies as well as layers. My next batch came from tractor supply. 7 out of 15 were roosters. So my friend took them off my hands. Not sure if he still has them or they went to auction.

Speaking of misguided. Why does everyone say this??? This is total BS. If they were going to do it they would use birds bred for that purpose not some backyard layer rooster. You’d have a better chance of someone strapping a jet pack on the rooster and taking a trip to the moon then using a fluffy layer breed for illegal means. Facts folks instead of spreading rumors.

Omg. Seriously. I’d bet you have zero proof of what you’re saying.
Their actually right, barnyard roosters are often used for bate believe it or not, so they have a point.

The guy who runs a BBQ joint here is building a pen to take my cockerals (I hope). He is planning to eat them as needed, and I don't feel he would mistreat them. I wish I could eat them, but I just can't do it. For every one we raise and eat or sell or give away, they at least have a decent life until eaten. Better than the life of the ones in the groc. As was mentioned, only game roosters are used in most fighting organizations. However, there are plenty of people who love to see any animals fight. I've heard of people around here tying cats' tails together and throwing over a fence. And if you leave a black or torti. cat at the pound, those are often taken for rituals. A neighbor told me he would take any roos, and to just drop them off in his yard. I did, and his roo immediately ran out after it.

You also have no idea what you’re talking about. *Bait? Are they using them for fishing?
The only point I see is people continue to pass on rumors they hear. I suppose if you hear something more than once it must be automatically true.

Bait,as for bait for fighting cocks, like target practice. It’s not about rumors, this happens and people do it and get caught for it all the time.Maybe not often, but it defiantly exists.

I mean maybe there are some people who use them as bait but as @roosterhavoc mwntioned any real fighting operation would not use anything but a fighting bird to train a fighting bird. It’s not right, I’m not condoning it, but it is what it is.

Your rehomed layers have more of a chance to live a stressful life being taken from their flock.

I believe some zoos and wildlife rescues will take them to humanely euthanize and feed. I don’t k ownif you have to be tested to be able to donate to them though.

Honestly most all of free roosters do to families trying to breed them. Talk them up as a purebreds and someone will see the opportunity

Also..... maybe try gearing your ad to what you would like to see. “Looking for a family who needs to eat and will appreciate and care for this rooster while they have it.”

You can actually make great symbiotic farm relationships off of CL....

No it doesn’t. What some inbred redneck does in his backyard might be one thing. When it comes to gamefowl uh no. What would be the purpose? That’s like a Pro boxer practicing with a 3rd grader. The pro wouldn’t get much practice out of it.
When it comes to Craigslist and people on there well who knows what some individual might do with any particular animal. There’s weirdos everywhere but it’s still the exception and not the rule.

We had two roos that we needed to re-home, so an Amish family down the road took them. I am pretty sure they were either integrated into their flock...or eaten. We just could not keep them, as we cannot free range due to fox and other predators in the area, and while we have a large coop and run, it was not enough to keep them from fighting. Once they became aggressive to people, we got rid of them.

So, just an option for some folks if you have birds that have to go, and don't have other options.
