RE: Organic feed- I feel like such a dummy, but oh WOW

As some of you may recall, I have ranted and whined a bit about having to shell out $33+ for 50lb organic feed. This because our feed store wouldn't/ couldn't order anything but the organic chick starter (we needed turkey & duck as well) so I was left with buying it from MMH and driving to Webster City, IA (close to an hour) to pick it up. After 8 weeks of this, my DH happened to notice the label on the bag- www.bluestemorganic.com

Hmmm...we go to their website. Well guess what? They too are located in Webster City. I emailed them, and got THIS reply: (copied and pasted)

We also carry fishmeal, kelp, argonite, mineral bases if you are wanting to put a ration together on your own.

Wow. I mean, of course I knew MMH had a markup, they do have to make a profit after all, but $15 a BAG? I mean, they are even in the same TOWN, so how much could they be paying for delivery? Heck, they probably have their own people drive over and pick it up! So, bouncing between lamenting over all of the money I could have saved (especially since I just picked up 7 bags of feed last week) and jumping up and down over all the money I WILL save in the future.

At least now I should be able to lower the cost of the broilers I planned on raising from $100 per bird...

Anyway, perhaps this info will benefit others in the Iowa area- or farther, depending on what you are already paying with shipping! It is REALLY nice feed too-we have been getting just the organic chick starter from the feed store, which comes from Purina, and frankly, it doesnt look real appetizing. Blue Stem's stuff is soft, fluffy, and sweet smelling-the birds seem to prefer it as well.

You're so lucky to have a source for affordable organic feed! We've got nothing like that here that I've been able to find.

BTW, my husband is originally from Fort Dodge which I'm guessing is your neck of the woods if you're an hour from Webster City. We were in Webster City last month and it's a good thing I didn't know about bluestemorganic at the time because I would have had to convince my husband that finding room in our over-stuffed car for chicken feed and hauling it home 1200 miles was a fabulous idea. He already thinks I'm a little unbalanced.

I think I will quite complaining about seeing bagged organic feed hit $13.50 for 50 lbs on the shelves around here. Buying by the ton does drop that price dramatically though.
