Very sturdy looking structure. I think you should grow grapes or kiwis over the open section. your run looks sturdy enough to hold the weight! And you can grow just about anything there in so calif. congrats!

def does not need blocking for structural support......9 ft is not long at all....house roofs dont get blocked......if you are thinking about corrugated roof you need to ad purlins anyway and they will keep the rafters from bowing if thats your concern.
