It was always my belief that the stress suffered by factory farmed chickens was not from being IN cages, per se, but by the fact of being crammed into TINY cages by the hundreds.
Its not unlike the stress also suffered by factory farmed pigs and cattle, who also suffer from being crammed into overcrowded and unnatural situations.
I'm sure chickens who encounter a predator while roaming around your yard DO suffer stress, the same way you or I would when suddenly presented with a threat. I'm equally sure that, what with having a brain the size of a peanut, they are over that stress as soon as the danger has passed; whereas their poor cousins in a factory farm never get a break from the stress of overcrowding.
