Our girls pen is now ready for them to move in, with concreate borders and 6 ft high fencing and roof the girls are better prepared for ‘lockdown’ if we are not in the garden, I do have a question though, the ground I now compacted soil with not a green shoot in sight( work boots and cement mixers have taken their toll) what ‘cheap’ or free natural materials could I scatter for the girls to enjoy scratching around in?

My chickens love snacking on freshly mowed grass clippings! I also have done various leaves, thrown in some fresh, moist soil with little bugs in for them to dig around in. They love it!
Would love pics of your enclosure if you have a chance!

Thanks for the ideas, there’s not much lawn to clip now they’ve ‘snacked’ on it but there’s a large field next door which has lots of bracken, is that any good for flooring?

Beware grass clippings, or any loose greenery, they can clog a crop pretty quick.
Think about grazing frames instead if you want to give them something green to nibble on.

You'll need some bedding to 'soak' up the poops.
That can give them plenty to dig around in.

Would love pics of your enclosure if you have a chance!
Yes, please!
