Hi im a fairly new chicken mummy. Just wondering how to tell if my golden comets ( 4months) are readying for laying just thought because kellogg the cockrel is mating with them , does he know? think their squatting (or some are)their combs are now obvious and quiet red but not as red as hetty my older girl already laying .

Check the space between the pointy pelvic bones. If it is more than 2 finger width, laying is imminent. If less than 2, you aren't close to getting eggs.
4 months is very early. Sexual maturity is earlier between winter solstice and summer solstice. After summer solstice, maturity is delayed.
I'm betting you have at least two weeks to go if not a month or more.
