Ready Set Hatch! Set 3/17 Hatch 4/7 - ready now! Hatch-Along

They are!

Do you guys think the chicks will be good in a cage outside? There is a good box of wood shavings under two headlamps hanging. They can move in and out of the heat as needed!

What do you think?

Yikes - I know you're not up north like I am but will it stay 90-95° all day and night in there? I'd be very worried about predators as well - chicks are so easy for them to grab. What is the cage made of? It would need to be caged on all 6 sides - floor and roof too- with small hardware cloth, chickenwire is not strong enough and chicks can actually fit through the holes. That's for any type of protection. Keep in mind many predators will reach through and pull them out of the holes, not to be graphic but they'll pull through the parts that fit when they're bigger too. I'm a worrier so maybe I over protect, but I feel like I brought them into the world without a mom to keep them safe so I feel I need to do that for them. I think most brood them inside a house or at least inside a closed up building with supervised outdoor outings until they're fully feathered - around 5-6 weeks.

Didn't mean that to sound the way it did - sorry! I wouldn't sleep if I didn't mention the threat of predators though :) I'd hate for your chicks to be lost, so just trying to make sure you consider it in your setup.

I agree.

They need to be draft free too, so if they were outside I would have walls on the sides to keep the wind out. I have seen brooders outside at breeders before, but they all had sturdy lids, were under cover (patio's and deep eve's)

I have mine in my office, most would use a laundry. After a week they do start to kick up some dust so many like enclosed garages or sheds.

Glad to hear you have two out and about.
