ready to replace shavings with sand/fill dirt.....need help!

Contact someone who sells gravel/soil/sand. Tell them what size the area is and they will tell you how much it will take.

I use sand in my run which is my coop since I live in a warm climate. My DH has been picking up a 50# bag of play sand at HD each week to add to what we have in the run since the chickens do dig down into the clay soil. The sand is so much easier to clean than the soil.

Good luck.

There's a sand calculator on the net you can use. I'm too lazy to google that for you right now.

I used about 2/3 of my 2 yards for my 8x12 run at 4"

Probably 3 yards will take care of your needs. When you get it delivered, it doesn't look like it's enough at first glance.

i'll try to break it down for ya..
a cubic yard is, if you could imagine a 3foot square box filled with sand. that is 3'high x 3'wide x 3'deep= 27cubic feet
now your coop is 10'wide x 15'long= 150 square feet
so if you were to go with 3" deep of sand that's .25 of a foot. (ie. 6" = .50 of a foot & 9" = .75 of a foot)
so with your 150 square feet x .25 depth of sand = 37.5 cubic feet. that's how much sand you need
unfortunately places that sell sand only deal in yards.
now there is 27 cubic feet in a yard of sand as mentioned above.
so your 37.5 cubic feet divided into 27 cubic feet = 1.38 cubic yards so to round up you'll need 1.5 yards
get 2 yards so you can have a lpile of extra to do any topping off when needed.

as too where you can buy sand, try calling places where you would buy mulch, gravel, etc...
alot of time they will deliver if you don't have a truck or a trailer, but there will be a fee.

Thanks for the break down, it helped me out a lot. I guess I'm gettin all sand! How much does it normally run? I dnt want to get ripped off or anything.

I'm thinking about getting sand for my girls and was wondering if it would get too hot for their feet when it is very hot and sunny outside?
