(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, we had one dumped at our home a few months back and she's been part of the family since.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We only have one. However, we would love to add more, but want to make sure we pick based on what's best for the one we already have.

(3) What breeds do you have?

I'm actually unsure what breed she is and I'm hoping to figure that out in this group.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

So many things. They are so fun, smarter than most realize, and ours at least is protective of us. The benefits from fresh eggs is also a plus. Our 5 year old daughter is learning responsibility on their needs, but also the proper ways to love and respect of any animal.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love being outdoors. Especially working in my yard and gardening. Also, refinishing items and creating items. Love any new projects. Crafts is also something I enjoy doing, especially with our daughter!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm Blessed to be able to stay home with our kids. We have a 5 year old daughter that is in kindergarten, but she does Virtual homeschooling. We also have an 18 year old son that will be graduating in a couple months. We sadly lost our two golden retrievers within months of each other last summer. They were 16 and 17, so we were truly blessed to have them that long, but doesn't make it easier. We will be adding a new puppy at some point, but still not ready emotionally. I strongly believe kids should grow up with either a dog or cat. We are excited to add some more chickens once we learn more and possibly wanting to get a goat or two. We are attempting to start our own vegetable garden this year. I just feel you can't go wrong with your own.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I first came across this group a few months ago while trying to research about our new chicken, Chikaletta. I truly believe with all of the information you provide would help us immensely. We will finally be able to have Accurate information, guidance, and extras. So thank you so much for allowing me to join!
I'm attaching a picture of our chicken and would appreciate Any information about her. I'm not even sure what kind she is or anything. Thank you in advance for any information you can give me. Really looking forward to being in this group!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm truly sorry for the loss of your dogs. :hugs
I lost my 5th Doberman last October. The lovely lady in my avatar is my most recent adoption. She's a doll! Consider adopting a dog in need. There's nothing better. All 6 of my Dobermans were adopted.
Your hen appears to be a Silkie mix!
Do you already have a coop for her? Has she shown any signs of going broody? Silkies are notorious for that. If she does, you could set her up with hatching eggs and she can raise her own future flock mates! That is yet another incredible experience your daughter (and you) could enjoy. There's nothing like watching a broody hen do her thing.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry about the loss of your dogs. :hugs They are so much more than animals, they really are family members and it is heart crushing to lose them.

Aww...your hen is adorable! :love I hope you can find her some friends soon. I kept a lone hen for over 2 years, she was 9 and the others had all passed away. She did ok! Lots of attention from me, we free ranged together, full length mirror she hung out with, radio kept her company when I was away, she LOVED to come in the house for goodies. :D

Anyway, good luck and welcome to our community! :-)
