Really HARD egg-shaped mass in crop area - but happy, pooping, "normal" in all other ways.

First - any help is appreciated. I am not finding anything by online searching. My black sex-linked hen is 4-5 years old. She has had an egg-shaped, egg-sized, hard mass in the center of her breast for several days. I felt her squishy, gritty crop two days ago - it was empty this morning. She has been in a cage with no food (access to water, and I syringe-watered her) for 9 hours. She has pooped normal-looking, a little watery, poop 3 times. Eyes are bright, comb and wattles are firm and true red, weight is good, energy level is good, no squatting or lethargy at all, able to jump up to the highest roost. I massaged the lump for a good 5 minutes this morning - she did not mind. This afternoon, it feels harder, but I might be imagining that. Some feathers seem missing, but I think the skin is distended so that the feathers are spread out. I know what a broody, plucked tummy looks like, and this is not it. There is no ascites, no odor (I have treated sour crop in the past.), no apparent discomfort, other than she wants out with her buddies. I was going to try olive oil, a stool softener, etc., but I don't think this is a crop issue. HELP?

So, it's not crop squishy or impacted (since you treated that before)...just in case, I'll link a My Pet Chicken anatomy chart to be certain to rule that out:

It is not ascites, and has no smell.

On "breast," so I will assume it does not appear to be in the area for egg binding....but let's not completely leave that out.

Hard mass. Tumor of course leaps to my mind; however, I did a google search on tumor, and came up with this interesting article from a vet that discusses the differences.

It is possible it is a hernia and that the gizzard has fallen through into the hole left. Only x-rays would tell.

Good luck figuring this out.

Thank you - I will begin looking at your links right now!

Update - I confined my black chicken all day - lots of water - bread with olive oil. She wanted out, so I put her with her flock in the early evening. At roosting, her crop was soft and gritty - the "egg-like tumor thing" had not changed. So - definitely not a crop issue.

No...not really.

If it is at the breast bone area...and hard...I'm back to tumor.

Air sacullitis would be at the front of the breast, base of the neck, but squishy.

Without seeing the bird, it's hard to know the "area" it could actually be resting in.

I did have to recently cull a bird for a tumor that just kept growing and growing until she looked uncomfortable.

Can't imagine whatever it is that it is good.

Sorry.

Thank you for your continuing comments. If it enlarges and/or she appears to be uncomfortable, stops eating, shows lethargy -- I will take care of her. :(
