One of my hens had a really messy butt so I tried to clean it and found that it has a huge swollen, very red place to side of vent, behind leg. I tried to clean, clip feathers away to get to mess, put antiseptic ointment all over sore. What do I do!? I'm afraid she is going to die.

Get up to 10 posts so you can upload a picture, it REALLY would be helpful.
Just off the top of my head, can you see maggots at all?
Is the skin UNbroken where it is nasty looking?
Any idea how long this has been going on?
Has she been laying eggs?

So sorry about your hen. How old is she? I have a few older hens left from a small flock I've had around for years (probably 7-8) and one had the same symptoms you describe. I consulted some forums and concluded that she was egg-bound and treated her for that with no positive results. We're close to Cornell University and they've recently brought a poultry specialist on board because of the increased interest in chickens and they do our large animal work, so the specialist was interested enough to do an on-farm exam on my poor old hen. He concluded that she had ovarian cancer. Quite common in older birds.
