Really mean rooster!

Good to know! Most people talk about separating to a dog crate and a year seems like a long sentence!

Everyone here lives in luxury. We set up a wonderful pen one year for a pair of bantam cochin brothers. Those two took until 2 years of age to get integrated into my large flock. They were such troublemakers. Now they are productive members, instead of pains.

That's so awesome! Two years is patience with a capital "P"! After having to give up my lovely Speckled Sussex cockerel this summer for never.shutting.up I wish I could take them all in and have a separate delinquent flock where they wouldn't bother anyone!

We now have 4 roos and all Polish! They work the yard like hearding cattle (gently) and they do not fight at all! I am totally shocked!!

My white leghorn roo is roughly 3 years old. I never really handled any of my chics, but esp my roo. Occasionally, he tries to stomp towards me, but I just hold my ground and stomp back. He backs off and goes elsewhere. He is a good boy. As for yours, definitely be confident, but I am afraid you may end up having him for dinner.

We have acquired a really really mean rooster from a guy that posted on the local social media group here that said he had purchased what he was told were all females but one grew up to be a rooster. The rooster is one year old he said and I suspect that the truth is that he didn't want him because he's extraordinarily mean!
My question is, is there any way to change his horribly mean behavior? I have tried being nice to him and not squirting him with the hose like the lady who owns the chickens told me to do to keep him from attacking but being nice to him absolutely does not work! Any suggestions? He's really really really mean and sneaks up behind you if you take your attention off of him for even one second and attacks viciously!

Hi, I have tamed my aunts mean rooster what you have to do is just hold him somewhere quiet with treats for about ten mins at least if he tries to attack stand your ground he takes a step you take two. If you decide to get rid of him don’t eat him just send him to a chicken sanctuary they should take him and you will know he will have a good home.

What a person does with a rooster (or any other chicken) they don't want to keep is their decision. We eat ours. There is no such thing as a "chicken sanctuary" anywhere near here. As long as they are not being neglected, abused, or suffering in any way, a person has the right to do as they wish with unwanted birds.

I'm not upset. I just wanted to point out that chicken sanctuaries aren't an option for everyone. I have no doubt that you have them near you. I don't know where you live, but I live in a rural part of my state. People still raise their own food around here, whether it be animals or gardens. Most of our food is grown here, purchased from neighbors or animals that we hunt. I think in many rural areas it would be hard to find a chicken sanctuary or some such thing because of the lifestyle. Chickens are considered livestock more than they are pets.

That’s cool to be able to live off the land where I live it’s illegal to go hunting in most places because the animals are rare out here. I am apart of 4-H and that’s how I got my chickens and most people in 4-H eat there chickens too.

Can I ask what your general location isn’t that hunting is illegal?

4-H is a great program! I’m glad you’re in it and get to experience animal care and husbandry.
