Really need to know what to do...

Ok, so I found someone on craigslist to take our beloved Rooster. Well, I was talking to a friend on the phone yesterday and told him about the person I am taking my bird too. He told me her birds have all been diagnosed with upper respiratory diseases! She is being treated but I should not give her my bird! Well, me and the lady have been talking for a few days and made it seem like the perfect dream home for my rooster! I am a little upset, what would you all do? Would you go ahead and let her have the Roo? Would you confront her about the disease problem? She was going to give me a few young pullets too! Darn! What to do...?

Gee what a dilemma!

I suppose I'd just ask her nicely if there are any respiratory infections or other issues in her flock right now that she knows of.

You know...give her the opportunity to be honest first. Then if she says YES, then recommend you wait another few weeks to make the chicken swap. (And then quarantine the HECK out of any birds she gives you for at LEAST 3-4 weeks)

If she says, NO...then you can say as politely as possible

"The reason I asked is that I heard through the grapevine that you had respiratory illness (or whatever it is) in your flock, and wanted to make sure that we don't spread any illnesses between our chickens"

and see what she says...

You always have the right to end up being a 'jerk' and changing your mind about giving her the rooster, but I think you also have the obligation to give her the chance to tell you what is going on in her flock and explain it to you.

Got the E-mail response, she was 100% truthful. Her birds had been tested positive and they finished their Treatment as of this past week but she still has the Meds going to be cautious. She sounds like she really loves her birds alot. She also informed me that a few breeders around the San Antonio Area have all come down with CPD? A upper respiratory Disease so she warned me to be cautious when buying and what to look for. She bought a few chickens weeks back that she did not Isolate long enough and thats how her birds all got infected. So I guess I will go ahead and take Booger to her, but may not be coming home with any Pullets...I guess I will see when I get there Sunday. Thank you again Arlee, you are great!
