Hi folks.......haven't been on here for several months but I'm hoping to get an answer to my question.

A month ago I made a chicken tractor and gave it to my elderly neighbor with 3 layers. Today she sent an egg over for me to see and I have never seen a yolk so orange. She free ranges them which I can't do with mine but they also get into her deer corn. Why are her yolks so orange.......free ranging or deer corn?

I am jealous!!

Thanks.........Mary

It's the free ranging. There's plenty of corn in chicken feed, so yours are getting corn, too. If you'd like your yolks to be closer to those of free range hens, give your chickens some grass! When you mow, toss the clippings in their pen. They'll love it!

LOL The 1st time I cracked open a free ranging egg I looked at my mom and said, "Whats WRONG with it??"

Thanks for the answer. We give them grass all the time but mine are a deep yellow. I couldn't believe how thick her yolks were too. Wish I could range them!

I agree with TurkeyMountain. It's the greens that cause the bright orange yolks. I free range and I absolutely love the bright orange yolks.

I know what you mean about the orange yolks. Mine are like that. If I crack one that happens to be a little lighter and looks more bright yellow and not quite orange, I'm kinda embarrassed like "man I would hate to sell someone a yolk that looks like that!" Mine free range all day. If I have to keep them locked up for a few days I can tell they just aren't nearly as happy as when they have free roam of the whole yard. They all just stand around close to the coop door. Yelling "Hello! You forgot something, LADY!"
