I have been lurking for sometime now and have learned a lot of things. In February I purchased my first chicks (Rhode Island Reds) and they are all very healthy and happy as far as I can tell. But I live in the city and local ordinance dictates that you cannot have roosters within city limits. In my first batch I got a rooster. I know it's almost impossible to get the sex right all the time when they hatch so I'm just dealing with it. I need to find a home for my boy really quick. I'm afraid to post anything on craigslist in fear someone will lie to me just to get it and slaughter him. Could I please use this forum to find him a home? Anybody in my area willing to give my Red Island Roo a home? I’ll drive up to 30 miles to meet you halfway. He’s free to anyone that will not kill him and will provide a good safe environment for him. Thanks for listening.

Thanks again,

Try petfinder.com and if you post on criags list you can allways go out to the persons place that wants em to see if they realy need a roo...

I found a home for my roo on Craig's List.

Thanks for the posts. That makes me feel a little better and I never thought of actually going to check out the persons place asking for the roo. I'll give it a few days so I can find him a good home. Thanks for helping.

I understand that you have a desire to have your rooster placed somewhere that will not have it for dinner. I hope you have success. On the other hand if you think about it for just a moment, if all roosters were allowed to live out thier natural lives none of us would be able to keep chickens. It simply does not make any logical sense to be a chicken keeper without considering that most roosters will not "make it".

When you purchsed the pullets from the hatchery, what do you think happened to the males that were hatched? Very few of those roosters actually "sell" and most are disposed of at hatch.

If I could not in good conscience eat a rooster or in fact offer to allow someone else to eat it I would not keep chickens. Keeping or purchasing only pullets encourages the dispatch of roosters as surely as if you did it yourself.

good luck finding a home for your rooster. You might want to edit your subject line to show your location and the breed of your rooster. There was a recent post from someone looking for a RIR, unfortunately they were located in PA.
