The other day about three or four days ago we got baby chicks and so far three of them have died out of eight and one was already sick I noticed they all have pasty butt and i was wondering if it was okay if i waited till tomorrow morning to fix it I tried tonight but they wouldn’t stay still and I couldn’t go outside without waking anyone up to get warm water i was also wondering what I should do to calm them down when cleaning them I don’t want any more to die as i see them as my own children so I don’t want to over stress them

They’ll definitely struggle when cleaning them but you just have to hold firmly but don’t squish them. I would try to clean then as soon as possible since they’ve been clogged up for a while. So sorry about your other chicks that didn’t make it and best of luck to the rest!

If several have already died, it seems like you should try to eliminate all possible causes of death in the future. In my opinion, it would be best to clean them now, because waiting will only make it more difficult to clean and some birds could die overnight. I suggest getting a warm wet towel and wiping (not pulling) the poop off of the chick. I understand the pain of losing chicks :( lost one today. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately pasty butt can kill, but it may not have been the reason your other chicks died. I would clean the butts with warm water and cotton buds as soon as possible and then apply vaseline once the vents are clean. This stops the poo sticking again. Pasty butt can be caused by improper temperature, stress and the wrong chick feed. I would double check your temperatures and make sure that you are giving them chick starter. Since you bought your chicks and they had to travel back to your home, it may have also be from stress. I hope your chicks get well soon!
