I was out of town for about 24 hours and came home to my Easter Egger's rear end stripped bare. I believe this all happened while I was gone, but possibly could have started and I hadn't noticed shortly before I left. I have a total of four hens (no roosters) and she is the only only with this problem. Eating, personality, laying all seem normal. She is about 17-18 months old and has never molted. I expected molting to be all over, not just in the one area. She is one of my two older hens and didn't think she was the lowest in the pecking order, but I know she's not at the top. I introduced the two newer hens about four months ago and they seem to be getting along well at this point. Any ideas what this could be?

Hey there. Lol. I had the exact same thing with one of my three hens of the same age. When she was facing me she was scruffy from a dirt bath but when I saw her from the back she was totally bare. It is amazing how many feathers dropped off in one night . I am in piedmont area of nc. This is thier (my) molt

Meant to say its their first molt. I have to make myself not to panic each time something new comes around as it seems once a month something strange comes around.

Thanks so much! I considered the possibility of it being her first molt, but I thought it odd that feather loss was was all in the one place. However, after a couple days it seems maybe feathers are getting thinner in other parts of her body so I think you're right. She seems healthy otherwise. Thanks again for responding!
