I'm in the process of reading the novel "Tishomingo Blues" by Elmore Leonard, one of the main characters is at a Civil War renactment
and meets up with a woman who is in the process of making 'Naughty Child Pie' which is made with green tomatoes. She doesn't know why it's called

'Naughty Child Pie' but her husband's "ex-wife use to win all the big pie-making contests with Naughty Child."

I looked all over the Internet for it and the closest thing I found were references to the same novel... Any of you have a recipe for this. This novel takes place in Mississippi and the recipe may be Civil War era cuisine...

Any help appreciated.

Tishomingo Blues

Oh, Mississippi,
Oh, Mississippi,
My heart cries out for
You in sadness,
I want to be where
The wintry winds don't blow,
Down where the southern
Moon swings low,
That's where I want to go.

Chorus
I'm goin' to Tishomingo,
Because I'm sad today,
I wish to linger,
Way down old Dixie way.
Oh, my weary heart cries out in pain,
Oh, how I wish that I was back again,
With a race,
In a place,
Where they make you welcome all the time.

Way down in Mississippi,
Among the cypress trees,
They get you dippy,
With their strange melodies,
To resist temptation,
I just can't refuse,
In Tishomingo
I wish to linger,
Where they play the weary blues.

Second verse
Tonight I'm prayin',
Tonight I'm sayin',
Oh Lord please take the
Train that takes me,
To Tishomingo,
'Way down old Dixie way,:
Where southern folks are
Always gay,
That's why you hear me say.

Chorus
I'm goin' to Tishomingo,
Because I'm sad today,
I wish to linger,
Way down old Dixie way.
Oh, my weary heart cries out in pain,
Oh, how I wish that I was back again,
With a race,
In a place,
Where they make you welcome all the time.

Way down in Mississippi,
Among the cypress trees,
They get you dippy,
With their strange melodies,
To resist temptation,
I just can't refuse,
In Tishomingo
I wish to linger,
Where they play the weary blues.

Naughty Child Pie

1 chopped carrot

1 chopped onion

1 cup heavy whipping cream

3 chicken buillion cubes

2 tablespoons flour

2 cups finely minced naughty child (male or female)

Mix all ingredients and pour into a 9 inch pie crust

Bake one hour at 350 degrees.

Note - the number of pies gleaned from one child depends on the age and size of the child. Older children tend to be tougher.

Ingredients
Crust:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup butter-flavored shortening (recommended: Crisco)
1/2 cup cold water
Filling:
1 1/4 cups sugar
2 tablespoons tapioca flour
1 teaspoon grated orange zest
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 cup raisins
5 green tomatoes, or enough to fill pie crust, thinly sliced
Glaze:
1 slightly beaten egg white
Sugar, for sprinkling
Directions
For the crust:

Sift together flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder into a bowl. Cut shortening into flour mixture with a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles cornmeal. Stir in 1/4 cup of the cold water, then add remaining 1/4 cup and mix until combined. Cover dough and allow it to rest in refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Divide dough in half. Place on lightly floured board and pat out. Using a rolling pin, roll out 1 piece of dough to the size of a 9-inch pie pan. Put crust in pan and trim off excess dough around the edge. Roll out second ball of dough for pie crust top.

For the filling:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Mix sugar, tapioca, zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and raisins in a large bowl. Lay tomato slices in pie crust. Sprinkle mixture over tomatoes. (Overlapping will occur but tomatoes will shrink in size when baked.) Gently lay top pie crust over filling, tucking in the extra crust around the edges. Pinch dough with fingers or butter knife to seal edges. Using a knife, make 4 to 6 slits in top of crust to allow steam to escape. Brush top with egg white and sprinkle with a little sugar to give your crust a shine.

Place pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F. and continue to bake for 20 more minutes. Cool on wire rack.

*Cook's Note: If your pie looks ready to "spew out," open oven door for about 2 minutes.

I hope this helps.

I have a feeling you are right - that Mom's would use it as a threat to get kids to straighten out, or they'd make pie out of them... LOL

I do think I will have to try making Paula's recipe. So much of her stuff is so, decadent ("take a stick of butter..." LOL).

I finished reading the book - the woman never did actually make the pie, but the main character she offered it to did marry her in the end... As it should be.

Jody I ought to make naughty child pie with my DD for giving me the grey hairs yesterday! maybe I ought to threat her by telling her that I will make myself a naughty child pie with HER in it!
