Here in the Bay area we don't see many nights under 40
Yes the cups can and do get dirty.
I just clean them every day during water and food check .
I'm setup where I could go a few days without doing anything. But every day I spend atlases a hr cleaning.
Then I grab my ice coffee and spend 3 hrs just sitting outside relaxing and enjoying them and the awesome sunset we get 365 days out of the year. After sunset we all go to bed.

@Danny188 i picked up these horizontal nipples about a month ago and they have a much bigger tray under to catch water. The birds seem to really like them. Might be just what you are looking for. Kinda a happy medium from standard HN and cups. I took some side by side photos so you can see the difference.

I wouldn't want unthread and rethread them.
Just never had the need, so haven't used them.
Bought them out of curiosity as they came with extension tubes to install in a thick walled cooler.

i wish i would have bought those first befor i got the vertical ones i think i will try and find cups.
