Over the last couple (2 or 3) of years I've lost 30 and have quit free ranging my birds. They are now cooped.. but I've had the worst losses since cooping... so I did declare total war.
Not a one from this group. We bought two groups of 25 from McMurrays in October about 2 weeks apart. I used to have 7 pet hens. They all lived to be around 5 years old and free ranged during the day. One died from being egg bound and the other's were the victums of the yorkie next door (he's no longer around) or the coyotes. Then 2 years ago we bought 25 of the oramental mix from Mcmurreys. Something got under the wire in the run and ate all of their heads off and left the bodys! Something also did that to a pair of turkeys I had that wouldn't come in one night. Just ate their heads. But these have not been out of the chicken house or their reinforced enclosed run area. We just knew there were racoons and posuums around after the head eating so we set the traps. My mother in laws ceilings were falling in from all the racoons and that's why DH is setting traps there. I have also stopped putting out day old bread and seeds for the birds since I think that probably drew the critters.
