We built this large coop from mostly recycled wood, metalsiding and extra shingles someone gave us. It is 11.5ft x22ft. We divided it into three coops each with their own run. It cost us less than 700.00 to build it. I won't tell you how long lol

I think the more self sufficient we become as a nation the better off we will be ..The way the world is going we may just need to know this stuff one day really soon. He and his dumb old friends wont think I am so nuts when I get a egg.

Thanks cravenchicken. My son built this coop from an old awning carport frame that a neighbor gave us. I figured it wouldn't be too much of a job. We didnt need it completely closed in as we live in Florida and with our weather the more open area the better. What I didnt realize was that he decided to make fort knox. The metal roofing goes down 2 feet. The runs are 6.5ft high and go into the ground two feet as well. Nothing can get into that coop, It took him 2 months but i am very happy with it. It has a sand floor and is very easy to rake out to clean. he also built an additional small pen on the rear side for the roosters. When the picture was taken we had the older chickens in two sides and the babies in another. When the babies were 14 weeks we moved them into their own sections by breed. They had seen each othr throughthe fence so it was no problem incorporating the flocks. Most fof the money we spent was on fencing and believe it or not screws and 2x4's.building a coop first is the best idea. have any idea what 60 hickes can do to your house lol

Well well congrats on your achievement. I love recycling and getting stuff out of the dumpsters, they call me here in town the trash man and the pack-rat type. I also built my huge chicken's house 90% of free used materials.
Good luck with your future chicks.

our animal control in town just clossed and I'm hoping I can pick up one of the kennels outside, and the Igloo thats in it! They have just been sitting there for months now. I contacted city hall about it today, and I hope they call back:rolleyes:

We started our coop before the babies arrived. In fact, we thought we would have it 90% complete when they got here, and the finish work? No Problem. Yeah. Now they are three weeks old, the outside is nearly done, (DH put the metal roof on tonight, yeah!) but we still need to wire the thing (neither of us knows how. I think I'll be calling my dad real quick here), finish insulating, put up the OSB on the inside, build the loft, paint, put in vinyl flooring, build the individual pens....maybe, maybe before Thanksgiving I'll have all these babies out of the house.

Maybe.

It would be a great idea to see if there is a farm rescue sort of place nearby (we have an ASPCA farm near our house) where you could try to find some abandoned chickens in need of some loving. It would absolutely fit the theme
