I have been reading about Black and red Sexlinks and would like to try and incubate some next week. I understand that a “red” roo and a Barred Rock hen would make a Black Sexlink- is that correct? I have a Comet roo and some Barred rocks, would that work? Or did I reverse that combination?

The roos I have are:

• Australorp
• Red (?) Comet
• Barred Rock
• BO

The hens I have are:

• BR
• Comets
• Delawares
• RIR
• BO

Is any of those combinations useful?

Thank you all for your help.

oh, that is too bad. Comes to show you how much I know about genetics. I will check out that link. Thank you so much!

I have 8- 7 week old Red Sexlinks and very interested in what combination it takes to breed more
it can be a little confusing. I read that if you need pure breds that you need to find a reputable breeder because
even the ones you get from hatcheries aren't pure, I hope someone with more knowledge chimes in:)

Use your BO (Buff Orpington) over your Dealware hens.

That should make you some sex links, though they will be more buff looking in color rather than red.

Wishing youo the best in your efforts.

You could use a Red Sex-link to produce Black Sex-links.

Example -
R.I. Red male x Columbian Rock female = golden F1 males and gold F1 females (these would be much like the Golden Comets)
F1 golden male x barred hen = barred males and black females (these would be much like the Black Sex-links)

I had some chicks hatched to a broody Rhode Island red hen by an australorp rooster and they are very nice egg layers. Only three hatched but they are alsmost all black with a little red around their necks. Very nice girls.
