Red Cochin????

That is what Ideal sells as red cochins. They are such bad quality that they aren't recognizable as cochins.

I have gotten them and Buffs as well. The buffs looked like Buff Orps with feathers down the outside of their legs. I sold them all as layers and meat birds. Ideal cochins are a waste of $$$.

This was before I knew where to go. Now I am on Cochins international and have the contacts I need.

I will try to post a pic of him too-but he is still very young. I just got him on Oct 2nd, but he's cute. He is the blackish color barred.

Yeah, I am learning that now! I just got into cochins-and chickens in general- this year after seeing gold laced cochins at an auction. I was not aware of how bad some of the hatchery birds are. Where do you get your birds from?

Oh yes, hatchery birds can be quite dreadful in appearance, but can make good pets-you should see the hatchery quality salmon faverolle thread. Now THERE is a hatchery bird for ya.

I purchased my birds from high quality breeders. I paid a heck of a lot more for them, but now I am hatching my own birds that are worth as much as I paid for their parents. And I know that the chicks aren' going to pop out of their egg shells with rosecombs and featherless legs, so it's worth it in the long run. Plus I get to hug a real cochin poof whenever I want to!

my hatchery cochins from the feed store looked like something the cat drug home as they first started to get their feathers.. i had no clue what they were when i bought them.. and then as they feathered out i could tell.... the more pics of cochins i saw thoguh, the more disappointed i was in my little sweeties looks... but they have great personalities.. lol.. anyway... now that they're getting a little older, they're filling in better.. and starting to look more like they should... give it time...
as for the black in the red... hhmm yeah... i'll have to check my red to see if she's got black in her... is red really that hard to find?? or is it just bad from the hatcheries??

I did originally think it was a columbian pattern, but I asked a lot of people and they said there are not standard size columbian cochins. I went to take a picture and of course, my camera is dead and I have no batteries. However, I have a picture of a buff one I got that has the same markings as the red one. This picture is a much younger picture. But, it will let you all know how the red one looks.

Also, this picture is one of my barred cochins... someone asked me to post a picture of my rooster, but I can't take one this morning. So, this is a barred picture I have.

Ohhh my. Look at that tail! So these are bantams or standards then? Either way...I think that a golden comet or some other red egglayer type got in with their cochins.

Barred's not too shabby. Looks like a pullet to me, since the barring is thicker and more "greyed" looking around the edges.

They are standard size. Yes, the barred is a pullet. I just posted that because someone had asked about the coloring of my barred cockerel. I didn't have a picture of him, but I posted that one because she has the same coloring as my cockerel.

Guess I'm just gonna have to sell the red ones and that buff one and start over on them-since I only want purebred cochins! The good thing is, I wasn't planning on breeding those two colors anyway!

Um... Hmmm - Yeah, There's no way that can be a pure cochin. If you're starting over... Go to a breeder - I definitely wouldn't waste my $ on any more hatchery stock!
