"Red" Egg genetics?

I'd love to see an egg color calculator come up. Egg color I'm fascinated with but only know the basics of.

Horribly sorry for resirrecting a dead thread, but couldn't resist. One of the species of junglefowl from which modern poultry are descended, sri lanka jungle fowl, has been known to lay a red, not brick but RED egg from time to time. So the desired gene SHOULD exist somewhere in the poultry world, just a matter of isolating it and then propogating it.

Hey Illia ~ Do you have any Marans hens that lay those freaky "bloomy" eggs? I know when one of my gals lays them, they come out looking almost a violet color, until you wet them, then they are the ruby/brown color. I just wonder if there would be any correlation to the "bloom" and the difference in color if you bred that hen to a Pink egged roo? The down side on that theory, is that the bloomies seem harder to hatch, at least here. I've not had one hatch yet, but I know Pinkchick has. What makes them bloomy in the first place??

Rosy? Violet? Bloomyeggs? I am unfamiliar with marans debbi. I know that they are known for their chocolate colored eggs, but this the first I've heard of violet or rosey colored. That would definately indicate a gene for a more reddish tint since you mix red and blue to get violet.. i wonder if the gene might actually be there, but very closely linked to the brown egg gene making it hard to get by itself? I'm intrigued....... Wonder what it would take to establist a flock hatched purely from those rosey and violet eggs? Any offers of were to get some :D

Very interesting.
Chickens are so much more varied than people really know.
I wish there were more options at the market.

Guess thats why we all have the layers in our back yards.
