Hey all,

Advice please: my chicken is doing poorly! This hen battled near death from a respiratory disease two months ago, successfully. She has since molted once. She's only 1 1/2 years old. The problem is, her feathers returned but her comb and face looks gray, her eyes seem red....her whole appearance has a 'grayish' tone.

I recently started treating my flock of eight with Permethrin for fleas/mites this week--but her illness seems unrelated to the fleas, since the rest of the flock seems to be perky and in full color, despite the fleas. She is eating/drinking OK, but somewhat listless and her appearance gets more washed out every day.

We had another chicken whose face/comb started to look like this, and that one died. I'm trying to prevent it from happening again to this one. There is not great access to an affordable vet around here that will treat chickens.

Advice? Anyone seen this before? Thanks!

We need your location so we can give you the contact information for your state poultry diagnostic lab for you to send the next dead bird so you know exactly what killed the bird and what you are dealing with.

You have at least two labs. A necropsy and lab work will avoid guessing what the problem is and allow remedy of any potential further problems in your flock.
