Hi Everyone,

I am confused by the term duckwing used on our chickens. What EXACTLY does it mean.

The wing shaped like a duck?

Same color of the duck?

Lol. I searched online but no luck with answeres

The term "duckwing" came from the dark bar on the wing, similar to what some breeds of duck exhibit.

See how this rooster has a dark bar in the middle of his wing?

Unfortunately, just having a wing-bar does not make a bird a "duckwing." There are other issues of color that duckwings must conform to. For example, the bird in the picture is not a correct "golden duckwing" because his hackles are supposed to be pure gold, not black-streaked. I also know that, at least in the Araucana breed, golden duckwings are supposed to have gold shoulders, not red like this bird. In addition, duckwings must have a solid black breast (mottling in the breast is one of the most common color problems in duckwings, in my opinion).

I have been wondering this as well... thank you for the clarification! That Roo is GORGEOUS!!!!! Proper duckwing or not

I dunno, which rooster are you referring to?

If it is your Phoenix, you could call it a golden duckwing, I suppose, but most people just call them "golden," as in "golden phoenix." I'm not sure if this is just because people are lazy, or because in the Phoenix breed there is no need to differentiate between "golden" and "golden duckwing" so the "duckwing" part is just assumed.
