Red Hampshire Red...?

Do New Hampshire Red chicks get in black barring before turning red?

Mine didn't...but they are hatchery and do have some black on the tips of the tails...

A New Hampshire will have black in the tail and some black ticking in the hackle, but no barring.

Er.. I'm pretty new to chickens.. do you mind telling me what, "ticking in the hackle" is supposed to mean?

Yup. You will see this in the Reds when they first start to feather out, but it fades out and they turn all red for the most part. If you want to see some gorgeous New Hampshire Reds though take a look at these:
