Red Heat Lamp making Chickens Violent!?

I put red lamps on my Silkies when the temperature goes below freezing (I live in Middle GA where the weather is really mild). I think that I will stop, though because mine will Not Settle Down while they are on. I go out several times during the night while the lights are on, and they are always awake and moving around in the coop. I worry that the lack of sleep will tire the hens out and prevent them starting to lay on time. I am sitting on pins and needles as it is...waiting on an egg!
Any comments or suggestions on my thoughts?

Well now Silkies aren't technically chickens. A heater might not be bad for them since they are from a warm planet somewhere outside the Milkyway.

However if you really want heat without the light you might try and Oil filled type heater on low. Hung from the ceiling where they can't get to it might be a good idea.

Silkies don't roost I understand so them sitting on the heater or jumping on to it to roost shouldn't be a problem.

I do hope you are wearing your hat when you are around them too. You need to be careful of their mind control powers.

Here in Oklahoma our weather is up and down. Tonight it's going to be in the low teens. My chickens (7 hens 1 rooster) are RIR's and they are in a metal barn no insulation. I have a heat lamp hanging about 2 feet over their roost, It comes on with a timer; same with their waterer. Their heat lamp only comes on when it below 27. I figure inside it's a few degrees warmer and I haven't had any problems with any of my chickens at that 32 degrees. Next year I hope to insulate and I won't use any heat on them but I will on the water. Sorry I got to rambling on...I haven't seen them act funny or unusual when I check on them late at night. They are still laying really good. (Maybe it's not the heat lamb but something else) Good luck finding out the problem.

My red sex links just did the same thing. I thought they were going to kill each other. I have no clue why but I thought I'd let you know your not alone :)
