Red Jungle Fowl?

I go to a local auction last night looking for some hens.

This old guys has some birds for sale, one rooster with six hens. They look very nice and pretty young. He tellls me they are from "this summer" and should start laying in just a few weeks.

They looked like some kind of game hen to me? Then he tells me some long winded story about where he got them and that they are "red jungle fowl", I ended up buying the birds. There where very few bidders present and I got them for $3.25 each.

So I do some checking online today and find a picture of them online and they look just like my birds! So I guess I now have a flock of "Red Jungle Fowl".

Anyone know anything about these birds?

The rooster cut loose this morning, he sounds new at it, he may have had some big brothers in his old home place.

These birds are also called more commonly as Black Breasted Red OEG's and yes they seem to be quite rare but can be found with little trouble. I have 1 Rooster and 4 Hens this rooster is so cool looking and the hens are real lookers. how about yours what do they look like.

Hello...

If they look like them, chances are they are NOT Junglefowls. Jungle fowls...for the most part... must have at least blue/grey legs and the REAL good specimens will have more towards the black/ashy color. Another thing is if they are shapped like that, most likely they are crossed with BBRed Old English or something of the like.

ETA: Oh yeah, and like cackle said, they're the ancestors of most of our domestic chickens...

Thanks for those video clips by the way. Now THOSE are some real wild Jungle Fowls. Haha. Yes, they get very frightened when approached that way in cages. My Vietnamese Junglefowl line does pretty much the same thing when I lock them up and approach them that way. The younger ones I raise on my own gets a little more calmer but boy are they still quite jumpy.

Anywho, I know its hard to believe but I rather be clear to help you and many others who buys from Ideal, Cackle, McMurray or any other "hatchery" related source.

HATCHERIES OF ANY KIND, LOCATION, OR REPUTATION DOES !!!NOT!!! CARRY THESE AS THEY CLAIM: JUNGLEFOWLS, PHOENIX IN WHICH THEY CLAIM TO HAVE 20FT. TAILS (ONLY THE "ONAGADORI" IS CAPABLE OF CARRYING THAT) OR SERAMA (SERAMAS)

That is the truth because my bird friends and I have intentionally bought those kinds of breeds from those places to compare with our direct source where we get ours and its completely different in looks, shape, size, personality, etc. For example, none of the Junglefowls we bought from the hatcheries listed above and a few others have grey legs (very basic physical principle of the Jungle Fowl), none of the Phoenix birds have tails longer than 3ft. long and none of the Serama stood straight and proud like how Seramas should be and they all weight around Class C or D...

PS: Hatcheries deal with 100s and 100s of breeds, what are the chances that they can PERFECT a certain breed unless its something everyone wants like egg layers and such? What gets ordered most often is what they will focus their work on. How many people do you think orders Junglefowls, Phoenix, or Serama and such a year compared to "egg-laying/productive" breeds out there? Something to keep in mind

I agree, hatcheries rarely do have pure stock (of anything). It's noted in quite a few breeds, especially the rare breeds they claim to have.
