Hello - I'm new here- we just got a few chicks yesterday - they're about 9 days old. Using the typical 250 watt RED (as opposed to clear) infra-red bulb. It's a little too hot for them. I know I can put more distance between them & the light ...but I'd rather find a 125 Wat red bulb ...I can find clear ones but not red ones. I was told the chicks need a red bulb so they can sleep, that a clear bulb can keep them awake. 250 watts is a lot of power ...that's more wattage than we use in our whole house on average! TY!

title typo ...shoulda been 'red lamp or clear'

I couldn't find a red 125w either. Had to go with a white one. Didn't have any pecking problems but the brooder was 2x4 feet so wasn't crowded with 6 chicks. Maybe the pecking is related to the disposition of the chicks too. My hybrids were very laid back and might be the reason there weren't any problems. At night I used a heating pad for them to sleep on so eliminated the light keeping them awake at night too.
