I ordered 5 different breeds of light layers from Mcmurray's and got 17 jumbo crosses. Now, how can you mistake a bunch of quail colored little bitty chicks for huge, yellow chicks? Buttercups, fayoumis, silverleghorns and some golden penciled hamburgs.
At least they were great about sending me a new batch. They even sent me 28 to replace 17, free of charge.

Lowest payed workers they can get.. without a clue as to what a chicken is, let alone a breed type.

I have been getting a few batches from MM and have not had any problems of this sort. I think with 80,000 chicks moving through a hatchery every week there are bound to be some mistakes along the way. I have read the same kind of thing about just about every big hatchery. The fact that they were willing to provide good service and replace the order I think is to their credit.

The person packing may have been reading the wrong order, or maybe the person putting the label on put it on the wrong box?

Hmm, guess I sound a little hypocritical there with my last post. I benefitted greatly from Welp's mistake on the neighbor's order, so I wasn't really complaining.
Just saying, they all make mistakes here and there. With the volume they are putting through, there are bound to be some.

Oh.. I agree with you.. no way of knowing exactly what went on. Could have been any number of things.. and no I'm not singling out any hatchery.. I've had, read and seen mistakes from many different ones. And you point about them "making it right" ... is the thing that should be noted in a good hatchery.

btw.. that bird in your avatar.. looks.. well... YUMMY!!!....

Yeah, I love her. I just hatched more BBS Orps from Bargain to go with her and a pair I got from Sand Hill last year. She is definitely a good looking one, the other two, not so much so - hatchery type.
I love those big old dual purposed breeds and mostly what I have now.

It sounds as if more than just the visually missing vertebrae might have been affected in either the mutation or interuption of growth of the chick's spine as it developed in the shell. I've never researched the man's statement, but have been told that the English Bulldog's screw tail is a mutation that can sometimes progress farther up the spine, resulting in their pups being born with partial or complete paralysis of the rear legs.

I wasn't upset. They were great about making it right and I've gotten to try raising broilers a little sooner than I was planning on it. I just wouldn't have brought broilers to AZ in this heat, it's really hard on them right now.
I would definitely go back to Mcmurray. Their customer service is great and I've gotten very healthy chicks. I'm sure somebody read the order wrong or I got somebody else's chicks.
Considering they got the OEGB part of the order right, not exactly sure what happened but who knows, s.... Happens.
