Red Laced Cornish X and project talk (pics p. 8)

I found a breeder at a show who said she had two extra cockerals and to call her, called her about 20 times over a two month period, [no answer, no returned message], then she finally answered the phone just before Christmas and said come get them. I was supposed to get chicks later, but she never has answered the phone or returned a message since. Only one other breeder of pure Cornish has offered to possibly sell me a bird this fall, excepting for those found on the internet who declined to provide pictures of any of their birds. Hopefully I can get to the Crossroads of America show and come home with some, or make some contacts there and learn the secret handshake.

I left a cage with a guy down the road aways tonight...................... he's supposed to catch an Aseel hen "in the next couple of days" and put her in it........................... I may have to breed my own Cornish off her........................ providing I never just gave that cage away.............. and actually get it back with the Aseel in it.

I'm using some wheaton american games for my project. Im crossing them with white broilers. I got 2 american game hens for a real bargain, and they are very muscular and meaty, but weigh about 4 lbs. My goal is to make a heavy dual purpose bird that broods chicks, has decent feed conversion, are active foragers, with a good carcass shape. Games have all of the wild traits I would like to put back into a domestic chicken. I believe some old timers would cross their pure breed chickens with games to improve vigor in a flock. I finally learned how to AI, because my CornishX cockerel is too big and clumsy to get the job done. I started the AI 2 weeks ago with failing results. I tried again last week and I got some fertile eggs this time, but one of my hens went broody

Looking forward to pics of your birds and their chicks.
ETA: With a broody, you have a place to set those fertile eggs; but in this heat, you can probably just set them under a shade tree and turn them three times a day.

Just finished a huge job I was on for 6 wks and have decided in this heat to take a week off before starting another contract, I think I will spend some time in the coop/condo and that always means new pic's LOL. I have 30 barrels I planned to use for a breeding complex but this heat may bake them in there so I plan to wait till fall, sounds like a good excuse to me

. Charley and I have once again started incubating and collecting more eggs, I know we must be crazy, He lives 3 hrs away to the NE and we may get together on Saturday at a local poultry auction to just trade, sit and shoot the bull and probably buy more chicken stuff we don't need LOL.

I may pull them out and put them in a big cage for better pic's and perhaps fire up the chatter for lack of anything better to do in a 117 degree weather LOL. Thank god I have a good supply of "COLD BEER"

We've been getting a few breaks from the heat; the heat index will be around 100 today, but actual temperature at around 90, with a bit cooler weather predicted for the rest of the week, and possibly some rain.

Thank you Father.

Dang. I only saw it get near that temperature once when I lived in Hominy. Thats brutal with your humidity!
We're nearing 115 again all week and my birds are suffering. I have 5 that need to be butchered but it's too hot to butcher, so I guess they get a reprieve for awhile. They seem ok, just doing a lot of wading in the kiddy pools. They've actually learned to "forage" the past few days in the cooler mornings and evenings which cracks me up. I guess they're growth has slowed down some and they feel like eating a little from the salad bar?

Well I got 2 dark cornish hens today. One is a scrappy little devil! I already love her for it.

I know they'll take the heat better than my Orps and I'm really curious to see how a cross works out, if at all. Speaking of the heat, it's 101 here with 86% humidity and the radio says heat index is only 105? Who are they kidding? Heat index has to be higher than that!!
