I noticed that two of my hens' legs and feet look red and after looking closer, it looks like some of the scales are raised on their legs. Is this scaly leg mites and would that explain the redness? My other hen looks like her scales are slightly raised, but her legs are not red. The two with red legs are not currently laying and I didn't know if that was related or not? I checked the bottom of their feet for signs of bumblefoot, but did not see anything that would indicate that. Their feet are very muddy because we have had alot of rain here lately.

Anytime you see slight lifting of scales on the feet and lower shanks warrants treatment with castor oil or petroleum jelly to smother any mites. But the redness can also be from ammonia burn from too much accumulated feces in coop or run.

Thanks. I think I will just go ahead and treat it just in case it is leg mites. I don't think the redness is from ammonia burn. I clean the coop and run out weekly, and clean out poop under roosts more frequently.
