We have 5 chicks (about 2 weeks old) from the feed store. Our broody hens readily adopted them and have been very good mommas to these chicks. We've pretty much left them alone, but today caught one of them to see what color feathers are coming in around the neck and back. These chicks are totally infested with red mites. We looked at all three broodies and the other three chickens in the flock and cannot find one mite on any of the other adult chickens. I've looked in the coop and can't find a thing. Is it possible that the chicks have had them this whole time? I called Southern States to find out if they have the (DE) and thought we'd make them a little dust bat, but I haven't seen the babies imitate the dust baths yet. Can I treat the chicks with parasite powder or are they too young? I read one thread that said to make sure not to get it in their face. I'm thinking with these wiggly chicks, that might be impossible. Any advice on treating tiny bantam chicks would be greatly appreciated.
