Red Partridge Orpington informational hatch thread

Pics
No progress on the pipped shipped egg, but two others have joined it for a total of 3 externally pipped shipped eggs now. There’s hope!

Meanwhile, the best part of a baby chick:

Ha ha. I can imagine how you feel. So exciting!

West Coaster here, so I'll be checking in for another couple hours before bedtime, keeping you company in spirit. This already looks better for the partridge Orps than the last go around.

Aw thanks! Yeah, last time it was so depressing, watching them die... and that bloody failed assist 😭 Things are looking much better this time!

I followed along for that hatch too, and that part was awful, even though you ended up with a beautiful flock. Like you said, hatching shipped eggs is a gamble.

I wish Papa's had bantam Orps. I want to have a flock again that actually lays eggs, now that my elderly girls are gone. I think I'd like a flock like yours, only bantam, since my space is small. I liked the my cochins' temperament, but not the feathered feet. I saw on Ebay there was someone with show line bantam buff Orps and someone else with bantam DSL Barnevelders. Reading about your experiences, I might take the chance.

Jeff is always experimenting with new projects, he might be up for trying bantams too! Ask him.

I love my flock. The two breeds have some differences though. The Orps are laid back, quiet and tolerant of pretty much anything. The Barnies are loud and dramatic and freak out over dumb sh** 😄 The Orps are a grounding, calming presence for them. When the Barnies see the Orps not give a cluck about a new object, they are more likely to accept it as well, or a new food, or noise, whereas on their own they would’ve backed away. So they benefit from being together. If paired with a more skittish breed though, I imagine it would feed into the Barnies’ distrustful nature and they could get skittish, too. As for friendliness, the Orps are puppies and let my kids carry them around and snuggle with them. The Barnies distinctly do not want to be touched. However, they are first to hop in my lap or on my shoulder and settle down, talking to me (as long as I don’t touch them). So both breeds are friendly and pet-worthy, just in different ways. And both will let me pick them up, even the touch-averse Barnies won’t actually put up a fight, they just slink away, but will give in if I insist. And the broody one lets me take eggs from under her without hissing or biting. All that might be because I’ve handled them a lot since hatch though. Their breeder says hers aren’t that docile.

If you do end up getting mini versions of mine, do share some pics - I’m very curious to see what they’d look like 😍

The third one doesn’t seem to be zipping properly... Instead of going around the egg, it keeps widening a single hole and making chewing movements with its beak. I’ve read that chewing means it’s absorbing the yolk, but does the weird large hole mean it can’t turn around to zip properly? ☹️ At least its beak is out and it can breathe. But I guess I’m not going to bed yet after all...
