Red Ranger Lameness?

So sorry for your loss. It’s awful that you’ve had such bad luck with this batch... I don’t ever eat found dead animals, but I agree with Wyorp Rock, that opening it up might be reavealing. Maybe there’s something visible? I had a green spot on the inside of one of my layer cockerel’s leg once, my husband said it was bruising, but it was a very livid green color. (I gave that leg to the Ravens with the guts such as well, just in case)

Hi. Just to follow up on this very late. It was a vitamin problem. We give the m at birds liquid vitamins in their water now and have not had any more problems. Just in case someone else has this issue, try vitamins.

Could be, are these new RRs that you're talking about? maybe a different line?
I've encountered this same issue with some red colored broilers. One hen I tried to keep got startled, jumped up in the air just a couple of feet, came down and dislocated her leg at the hip.
Others I have had their legs pop out of the hip socket during the butchering process, usually while I'm lifting them up into the cone. I think because at that moment I'm holding their legs together with one hand while using the other to guide the rest of the bird into the cone. And I'm always very careful, gentle and respectful with the birds, I never manhandle them. Also I've never had that happen with any other type of chicken.

I've also come across some other genetic issues with them. Not visible on the birds I received but revealed later when I tried to breed them. Quite a few of the offspring had crooked hunched up spines, and several had a very odd condition, and maybe related to the other one, where their wings were set completely on top of their backs instead of on the sides. I had one hatch out with just one normal sized wing on the top and only a little nubbin on the other side.

@Jasonpdx , were you checking the mill date on each bag of feed? Was it an old feed problem? Here we use if up within two months of the mill date, don't want anything older.
Or a feed problem from a local mill? Or some birds genetically needing extra vitamins than normal?
Mary
