My favorite girl is suffering from a red, raw bottom. From what I've read I suspect vent gleet. She is still laying, eating well and doesn't seem to be in any pain. I inspected her and saw no evidence of lice. As far as my treatment, I clipped the matted feathers around the affected area (around 3" circling her vent) I washed the area with warm water without rubbing too hard because it looks so inflamed. She didn't seem to mind this. Then I applied a paste that I made from neosporin, tea tree oil and athletes foot powder. After I rubbed on the paste I gave her butt a sprinkling of the athletes foot powder on top of the paste. I know there is alot of wisdom out there. I plan on repeating this treatment 3x/week. Is my treatment plan appropriate? I look forward to reading all your thoughts.

Welcome to BYC. Can you post a picture of her vent area? Red bottoms can be a result of feather picking, and from scalding of droppings. Vent gleet is an old term for a fungal infection in the GI tract which causes a yeast type infection with red and white patches. There are numerous threads on how to deal with this if you search BYC or Google the term. Nustock Cream can be applied to the excoriated area, and probiotic plain yogurt may be given daily for awhile, then twice a week. Some use apple cider vinegar 1 TB or 1/2 ounce per gallon to acidify the water. A healthy balanced layer feed and good clean water can help.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Here is a picture, sorry about the quality. I don't want to put either myself or my girl through the treatments if they won't do any good. I gave her the treatment last evening and the inflammation seems about the same

In the picture you can see that she has feather shafts growing in, and the others may have pecked at her rearend. I would continue your treatments, and let us know how she gets along. Try looking up Nustock cream on Google-- it is a cream made from sulfur, pine oil, and oil, and helps to heal a lot of fungal or bacterial skin lesions. Some people make their own version.
