Yes ur right i think they are the best laying hens ive had! They lay eggs, I like having a couple in the flock, cause you have eggs. But they do age quickly.
Usually black sexlinks get the same health problems as red sexlinks, although I have heard of them living 4 years and a red sexlinks lifespan usually lives 2 or 3 years. I have heard of them living longer than that though. My red sex link is over a year old. I certainly hope she lives longer.I'm wondering about how black sex links might be different?
Do they lay a large/x-large egg also?
Are they as dominant as the red ones?
Do they also tend to have the same health problems?
I had a black sex link that was third in the pecking order of 6 chickens when I had her and I don't think she was really bossy. She never was mean to the other chickens when they ate with her, she rarely ever pecked. She is dead now though due to a possum attack. I am not too sure about red sexlinks. I have a red sexlink that is a year old and ninth in the pecking order out of ten chickens so I am not really sure about how dominant they are. I never see her bother my australorp except once in awhile when they are eating and even that is pretty rare. She was mean to my delaware though before my delaware moved a step higher than her and became boss. I guess mine are not really top of the pecking order though, Even the ones I had before that got bullied around by other breeds I always see my red sexlink I have now getting bullied around by the other birds, my delaware and barred rocks are especially mean to her. The easter egger and brahmas pretty much don't bother her they are more of the friendly type. Usually pretty rare, and I think my buff orpington is mean to all of the of the chickens! Our RSL is gentle, calm and friendly to other birds and people. Definitely not a dominant bird, just happy to socialize. Not sure about all these comments about dominance - that has not been our experience.
