I have 3 red sex links , all of them look the same .. one started laying yesterday .Here is my question... I have one that tried to mount my bantam buff orpington today and it seems to have a larger comb and waddle than the others and has not laid yet . It also seems to have the beginning of spurs ... BUT when I try to pet her she normally runs from me , today she squatted . I read online that the roosters are white and the pullets are red ... is this ALWAYS true ? Is there such a a thing as a Red sex link rooster ? Do pullets try to mount ? Do roosters do the egg squat ? I would post a pic , but I am not so tech savvy . I JUST figured out how to post things to facebook ... lol

Sometimes, females will mount other birds. In the absence of a male, and sometimes even with a male present, they take on male characteristics. Females sex-links are mostly brown with some white, whereas sex-link males are mostly white with just a splash of brown and sometimes yellow somewhere (generally on the shoulders) on the body.

Roosters do not do the egg squat. They may huddle in fear of another male, but will not do the squat.

Thank you soo much ! This is my first set of chicks ... I have had 3 go Roo on me so far .. the last one a Barred Rock/black star X that I waited and waited for "her " to give me and egg ... and what do I get a BIG COCKLE DOODLE DOOOO! I was thinking it would be just my luck that I have the ONLY RED colored rooster in this breed . My girl that laid yesterday and today is almost all white on her back but her wings and chest have the red color , so I was watching her , as she did resemble a few of the Roo pics I had seen ... It is good to know that I can go back to anxiously waiting for more eggs and not worry about more COCKLE DOODLE DOOOO-ing ! I do have only hens so it would make sense that someone has to be dominant, and the bantam would be the smallest [ not the weakest, but the smallest ] .. thanks again for your reply ...

I have THE SAME QUESTION...and I don't know if it wasn't answered because any idiot would know...Can a Red Sex Link be a rooster or are they always hens?? I have 6, they are 17 weeks, and one looks NOT exactly like the others... It was always whiter at the butt end than the others and now it has a bigger comb and waddles and they are brighter red. Also it has some longer tail feathers than the others. Maybe it's just a different kind of cross-breed??? I really don't want any roos, but I love all these chickens! It is the one on the right. (By the way, NO EGGS from any yet!) Someone please answer, can they ever be a roo????

In any breed of chicken, or any variety of chicken, there are going to be males and females. It's just how it goes.

Females of the red sex-link way, are mostly brown or "red" with white in areas around the body.

Males of the red sex-link way, are mostly white with a small splash of red on the body. The splash or red is generally on the back and shoulder area of the bird with some yellow throughout the hackle and saddle feathers.

With the coloring, yours looks to be a female.
