Hi Ryan and welcome to BYC. No, female chickens do not need a cock bird, unless you plan on hatching your own chicks.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

All the best

:welcome

As others have said, you do not need a rooster to get eggs. But some people do like to keep roosters...they are beautiful and if you free range, a rooster may help with protecting the girls from predators.

If you do decide to get a rooster, keep in mind 1 rooster can 'handle' 8-10 females...with fewer girls than that (or more roosters than that), you run the risk of over-breeding which can result in harm to the girls.

Best wishes to you!

Hens will lay just as many eggs without a rooster - they just won't be fertile so will not hatch into chicks. Roosters are often more trouble than they are worth
Why are roosters more trouble than they are worth? My rooster is very well-behaved and loves to cuddle up with me. Its the hen you have to watch out for in my house. She isn't mean but she will scratch and kick and flap if she isn't in the mood for being held.
