Hi Ryan and welcome to BYC. No, female chickens do not need a cock bird, unless you plan on hatching your own chicks.

Not only is the rooster not needed for the hens to lay eggs, most cities that allow chickens do not allow roosters

G’Day from down under Ryan Welcome!

At the risk of sounding like an echo Nope, no rooster required. I have 5 x bantam girls who cope quite nicely without an overlord If I cave in to one of them when they are broody, I purchase fertile eggs for hatching.
